I switched from TurboTax to TaxCut this year mainly due to Intuit the new pricing structure where they have both raised the base price a little and then they charge $ 9. 95 for each additional return that you want to prepare for beyond the first. Given these changes, it is time to try something else.
So far, I am very pleased to TaxCut. It imported my data from TurboTax last year without any problems at all. It will also import data from Quicken, even though I do not use this option.
It is a different interface and takes a little help, but the interface of TurboTax changes each year, with either a product will have to adapt to a new interface quirks.
Of course, it is quite early to be running the software, because the IRS is always the last things for 2008, and things such as alternative minimum tax are not nailed, but TaxCut yet a very good job helps me see where I was coming on my taxes for 2008. And that includes my schedule C for a consulting firm. Obviously, there will be lots of updates in a few weeks, but that we should expect from any software on the tax at this time.
TaxCut also done a great job helping me plan for 2009 and taxes. I had already done some planning using a Numbers spreadsheet on the Macintosh and that I can say if TaxCut was very precise. It was.
Overall, for those who are considering moving from TaxCut TurboTax this year, my take is that I find easy to do.

  UPDATE 1/24/09:
I am still very satisfied with this product. So far, I entered all my data, and it was very painful for both the Fed and State taxes.
I qualify this by saying that my taxes are simple enough, this year, AMT, not sch C, no sch K, etc. So I'm not really in some areas that are not often addressed in the tax software.
One thing I liked better than the tax was simple turbo exempt from income tax division in the state in relation to the outside of the State party. Also, the same way, treating the interests of the U.S. Treasury (Tax Exempt Status). Turbo Tax you enter 1099 for each part, instead of typing the information into a form of dialogue.
On the other hand, I have some criticisms:
  (1) no ability to import / download W2 and 1099 data (not that I find, anyway)
  (2) Form 1116 must be completed by hand, even if it is fairly simple – it could and should have provided an interview for this
  (3) provided no way to simply delete a line in a form (minor point, this has turbo tax, and I find it very useful) – you can of course delete the data in line
  INITIAL REPORT:
Obviously, it'sa bit too early to provide a thorough review of the program because it is essentially incomplete (like TurboTax): Many tax forms are not yet available in final form. There will be an updated 11 December, and I expect many more over the next two months. (I've learned not to submit the final performance before the end of March, since the bug fixes and shape corrections are often not final until that date. This is true for one TaxCut or TurboTax.)
However, here's my take: this is a fine program, and certainly more than enough to help them prepare a tax return. I used TaxCut in the past, but have used TurboTax in the past few years. I decided to use TaxCut this year because of the price difference, and because the new licensing policy for the TT is boring. So far, I find it easy to use, and problem-free import of data from the previous year TurboTax file TXF year and files.
A little weak compared to TurboTax: I remember that in the 07 TT, you can delete a specific set of imported data, and I have not found anything like it in this program. Not a biggie for me because I always put "control" in separate files so I can return to a previous version if I do, but that's the kind of thing that makes TT a little better in my opinion. Just not enough better that I will pay anything Intuit wants to charge (just a matter of principle for me).
Some general comments based on the experience of many years of doing my own (often complex) returns: Neither is perfect by any means. For many situations, you must do your own calculations from the outside (I use Excel), or enter data manually. Be aware that the treatment with the AMT, the AMT credit, and things like what's left of mind bendingly difficult, but not a nightmare to do that without a program. And you should always check the consistency of your results, because calculation strange bugs can persist for a long time. (I found a very stupid, but difficult to find in the TurboTax calculation bug a few years ago, having to do with the AMT.)
I will post an update in a few weeks when I had the chance to make more progress with my back. Will be able to examine the state of the program and at that time, maybe.

5. 0 out of 5 stars used TaxCut for years! I used TaxCut for years. It is much cheaper than an accountant. The only drawback is that they change each year.

Timmy @ 2:43 am #

I switched to TaxCut this year after the deception of the pricing of Intuit TurboTax. I used TurboTax since 1997, so I was a little nervous to make the transition, especially after having tried in 2004 TaxCut and TurboTax find its import file to be poor. But Intuit scammy behavior was too offensive for me to remain a customer.
The good news is that TaxCut works well, import my TurboTax files and providing a clean, easy interface interview (TurboTax was too complex, so I went with the form in a couple more years). The forms are also, if I want you able to interview forms and operating in parallel in TaxCut as you can in TurboTax – which is useful during the final exam. (TaxCut can display both, but you have to switch to one of the forms to add or modify entries in the form.) I wish I could also increase the type size forms, but TurboTax can not do that either.
Anyway, the important thing is that TaxCut does the job and, therefore, if you have a long TurboTax user like me, are not afraid to change BNE.

5. 0 out of 5 stars Overall the most cost-effective software that I find there are a number of tax software available. Assuming that your taxes are not simple enough for the software online for free and you buy yourself, I have found. . .

4. 0 out of 5 stars Not much change since the previous year or the year before or the year before, better than to do without help. This product is not very different from previous versions. There are some new tweeks annually.
