I live in the UK and sent a p50 into Inland Revenue a few weeks ago, I was wondering is there a way I am able to check the status of my refund

No, not really. I understand tax offices are a couple of months behind with correspondence. If you phone up, you will only get a call centre, and it is unlikely staff there will know of the actual work position in your tax office. Local offices no longer take telephone calls. Also it is possible another tax office is helping yours out with arrears of post, so your claim could be anywhere.
This is all because of New Labour’s wants to trim the size of the Civil Service, regardless. Staff have been cut to a minimum, and many tax offices closed or closing. This is what they regard as customer service!
