Amazon.com Review
From the tax experts at Kiplinger’s Magazine, TaxCut Basic Edition offers an appealing mix of easy-to-use features, plus an option to get your tax refund ahead of time. This package is certainly a more-than-capable choice for anyone filing Form 1040–even for new users.
To get started, TaxCut offers two basic options; a guided interview will ask you all the questions needed to complete your return. The program then completes tax calculations behind-the-scenes. For those with a little more experience, you can also select the Fast Form option, which shows you a list of recommended forms to complete. (Of course you can open any IRS form at any time to view or change values manually.)
Besides the guided approach, TaxCut offers online assistance with both IRS instructions and tax tips from Kiplinger’s, including tax “assistants” who guide you though crucial tax topics like capital gains, mutual funds, and tips for parents. (In testing, we found this last feature to be particularly useful.) Another worthy help option provides explanations in clear English on the purpose (and rules) behind a variety of common IRS forms and schedules.
The product has hooks into TaxCut State editions (which can be purchased online). Once you are ready to file your return, the Audit Buster feature reviews your return for correctness and any possible audit flags. (One interesting feature in the product lists the odds of being audited based on your income and schedules completed.) You have the option of filing electronically, and if you are getting a refund, you can even get a loan through the Electronic Refund Advance (ERA) feature (for a small fee), about two days after you file. In all, the basic edition of Kiplinger’s TaxCut offers rock-solid tax advice and a smoothly integrated feature set that will let you file your tax return correctly. It’s an easy-to-use choice for any first-time (or more experienced) tax e-filer. –Richard DraganAmazon.com Product Description
TaxCut’s interview asks you simple, direct questions tailored to your tax situation. Based on your answers, TaxCut does all the calculations, then selects and completes the forms you’ll need. TaxCut reviews your return just like an accountant would, checking for missing data, pointing out deductions you may have missed, and flagging entries that might trigger audits at the IRS. Once finished, file your return electronically–or print your ready-to-file form.
